my oldest baby turned 16 sunday. we spent his birthday at the lake and stayed up late watching the redskins beat dallas . perfect ending to a fun weekend. i ran 4 miles this morning. then i was blessed to 30 minutes with a massage therapist who made my legs hurt.so.good. my brother and sister in law got me 2 sessions, hoping it will help me make it to the finish line on 10/31. my left ITB was tight but everything else seemed fine. i'm so glad i went. i may have spared myself from injury this week. in fact, the end of week 12 last fall is when i was devastated by my left ITB injury. so, please pray i make it through this week. i'm so thankful it's a step back week in miles.

16
what a b-u-s-y weekend. sad and glad it's over. friday i tried to rest. really, who can? that evening i was on my feet all night taking pictures at my sons football game. it was their first home game and they won - big time. good times.but my.legs.were.tired. we got home late, again, so i let myself sleep in. i woke up at 9 on sat. and couldn't hit the greenway until 11:30. it was already 85 degrees and 50% humidity. but i had no other choice. my 11.5 y.o. daughter biked along with me. she was a great support. i went through 62oz of Nuun
- it wasn't enough. around mile 5, i could see thunder storms building. at mile 10.5 we started to hear thunder rolling off in the distance. i prayed at each mile that we would make it to the car before the rain. it was so hot. i had covered myself with glide
, but still chaffed in odd places. it hurt! when i was done 3 hours later, it was 91. the clouds saved me at mile 14. but between mile 15.5 and 16, i.thought.i.was.going.to.puke. my stomach started to toss. i knew it was heat induced. when i finished running, i walked a mile to let my body cool down. it was rough. but somehow i pulled through. i had left a cup of ice in the car to melt and mixed it with some hammer recoverite
powder to drink right after. as soon as we got in the car, it started to pour. i went to the gas station and got a water and a coke.(i read hal higdon
drank that after marathons so i wanted to try it. i think i'd prefer pure fruit juice instead but i needed the sugars.) that saved me from passing out. then i raced home and plopped right into the ice bath. it was instant relief. i rolled that evening after running some errands. sunday i woke up and my left quad was sore in two areas but everything else felt great. so weird. why areas and not the whole quad?

The napkin is so fitting for your run this week!
So glad you made it through this week. You're getting there, Kate!
Happy Birthday to your boy! 16, Wow!
That run sounds hard! Glad you finished!
Have you tried the Powerade they'll be serving at the marathon? Or are you bringing your own food/drink?
tina, thanks for the reminder! i totally need to switch over soon. i drink so much and i have not worn a water belt since i attach all my water/gels to my kids bike instead. i MUST switch to the powerade and start carrying my gels so i will be ready!
did you carry your gels in a spibelt or something else? i'm thinking i'll need 6 to 8. not sure what flavors they'll have at the marathon but i only like a few and have been using GU brand. i need to prepare!!
Great job on the run!
Last time I carried gels in my spibelt which worked out fine. This time I might try only drinking the Cytomax they'll be handing out.
Remember that most people think you need carbs when you run and Nuun doesn't have any so it might be best for an addition to other fuel when you run.
Have a good long run this weekend!
